Convert TAR.GZ, TAR and GZ to ZIP, and ZIP to TAR or TAR.GZ, Online
Drop an archive on the page, choose the format you need and download the result. The conversion runs in your browser: the archive is never uploaded, so it is safe for private files and works as soon as the page has loaded.
How the converter works
- It looks inside the file. The type is found by the first bytes of the file, not by its name, so a ZIP called .dat or a .tgz without the right extension is still recognized. Supported inputs: ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ (also written TGZ) and a single GZ file.
- It repacks, it does not just rename. The files are unpacked into the memory of your browser (the gzip and deflate work is done by the browser itself) and packed again in the format you chose. The contents of every file stay byte for byte the same. You can check it by unpacking the result and comparing.
- What is kept: the folder structure, empty folders, modification times, names in any language (Cyrillic, Chinese, emoji, names longer than 100 characters) and Unix permissions, so a script that was executable in the TAR is still executable in the ZIP.
- A single .gz file (for example
backup.sql.gz) becomes a ZIP or TAR with that one file inside. ZIP to plain GZ is not offered because gzip can hold only one file; use TAR.GZ for a whole folder. - The result is a normal archive, but not necessarily byte for byte what your archiver would write: the packed size can differ a little, the contents do not.
- Safe names. Nothing is written to your disk by the tool, but paths such as
../../fileor/etc/fileare cleaned anyway, so the converted archive cannot unpack outside its folder.
Limitations
- Size. The archive can be up to 1 GB and all files inside together up to 1 GB. Everything is held in the memory of the browser, so on a phone or an old computer the real limit can be lower; the tool then says it ran out of memory. The limit also stops "zip bombs", small files that unpack into huge ones.
- Formats. Only ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ and GZ. RAR, 7Z, BZ2, XZ, ZSTD, TAR.BZ2 and TAR.XZ are not supported, and the tool says so instead of guessing.
- Passwords and big ZIPs. ZIP files protected by a password and ZIP64 archives (files over 4 GB) cannot be converted. A damaged or incomplete archive is reported, not converted halfway.
- Skipped entries. Symbolic links, hard links, device files and sparse files inside a TAR cannot be stored in a ZIP reliably, so they are skipped and listed under the result. The same goes for files inside a ZIP that use a compression method other than deflate (for example LZMA or bzip2).
- Old ZIP names. ZIP files from old programs do not say which encoding the names use. The tool reads them as the ZIP format prescribes (CP437), so non-English names made by such programs can look wrong. Modern archivers mark UTF-8 names and are read correctly.
- Browser. A current browser is needed: Chrome or Edge 103+, Firefox 113+, Safari 16.4+. In an older one the tool tells you it is not supported.
- Several files can be dropped at once. They are converted one after another, each with its own download button.
