WAV vs MP3: what is the difference?

WAV stores uncompressed audio, exactly as it was recorded: 5 minutes of stereo music at CD quality take about 53 MB. MP3 removes sounds that the ear hardly notices and compresses the rest: the same 5 minutes take about 12 MB at 320 kbps or 5 MB at 128 kbps. That is why WAV is used for recording, editing and mastering, and MP3 for listening, email, messengers, phones and websites. A WAV that is too big for an email attachment (the usual limit is 20–25 MB) becomes small enough as MP3.

Is there a loss of quality when converting WAV to MP3?

MP3 is a lossy format, so a conversion always discards some information; “without loss” is not possible with MP3. At 320 kbps the loss is inaudible for most people on most equipment, and 256 kbps is already very close. If you need an exact copy, keep the WAV, or use a lossless format such as FLAC. Do not convert an MP3 back to WAV and then to MP3 again: every conversion loses a little more.
