ASCII Converter: Text to ASCII Codes and Back
Type text and see the code of every character in decimal, hex, binary or octal, or paste codes and read the text. The table of all 128 ASCII characters is below the converter. Everything happens in your browser: nothing you type is uploaded.
What is ASCII
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) gives a number from 0 to 127 to each of 128 characters: the English letters, the digits, punctuation, and 33 control characters such as the line feed (10) and the tab (9). The capital A is 65 (41 in hex), the lowercase a is 97, the digit 0 is 48 and the space is 32. Every code fits in seven bits.
ASCII, UTF-8 and Unicode
ASCII has no letters of other languages. Unicode gives a number to every character of every language, and UTF-8 is the way these numbers are saved as bytes. The first 128 characters are the same in UTF-8 as in ASCII, one byte each, so a text in English has the same bytes in both. A letter like "e with an acute accent" or a Cyrillic letter takes two bytes in UTF-8 (C3 A9 for the first), and an emoji takes four. This converter shows the real bytes of the text in UTF-8, so non-English text gives more codes than letters. Codes from 128 to 255 are not ASCII: they belong to old code pages and are not converted by this tool.
How to use it
- Text to ASCII: type or paste the text; choose the format of the codes (decimal, hex, binary, octal), the separator and the capitals.
- ASCII to text: paste the codes in the right box. Separate them with spaces, commas or line breaks, or write hex and binary as one run of digits. The prefixes
0xand\xare read. - The number of bytes is shown under the boxes, and bytes that are not valid UTF-8 text are reported.
Limitations
- This is not an ASCII art generator; it converts characters to numbers.
- A byte is at most 255: a larger number is reported as an error.
- The control characters have no visible form; the table shows their names.
