Whois Lookup: Domain Whois and IP Whois (RDAP) Check Online
Whois Lookup: Check the Whois Data of a Domain or an IP Address
Enter a domain name or an IP address and check the public registration data. For a domain the tool shows the registrar, the dates of registration, the last change and the expiry (with the number of days left), the domain age, the status codes, DNSSEC and the nameservers. For an IP address it shows the network the address belongs to: its name, the organization, the range of addresses, the CIDR, the country and the dates. You can paste a whole link: the host name is taken from it.
RDAP and WHOIS: where the data comes from
The tool asks RDAP first. RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement of the old WHOIS protocol: the registry answers over HTTPS with structured data, so the result is exact and not parsed from free text. The address of the RDAP server for every domain zone and every block of IP addresses is published by IANA, and the tool takes it from there. If a registry has no RDAP server or the answer lacks the dates, the missing data is completed from the classic WHOIS (port 43). The old WHOIS is going away: since 28 January 2025 most registries and registrars of generic domains no longer have to run it (a few zones, such as .com, still keep it), and RDAP is the required way.
If you see an address like rdap.arin.net or rdap.gmoregistry.net/rdap in a search or in a log, this is the RDAP server of a registry: ARIN manages the IP addresses of North America, GMO Registry runs some domain zones. You do not need to open it yourself: enter the domain or the IP here.
How to read the domain result
- Registrar. The company through which the domain is registered and where it is renewed or transferred.
- Issued, updated, expiring. The date of the first registration, of the last change of the record and the date when the registration ends. Time left shows how many days remain. After the date a domain does not disappear at once: most registries give a grace period, then a redemption period, and only after it the domain is deleted and can be registered by anyone. The length of these periods depends on the zone.
- Domain age. The time since the first registration. A domain can be older than its site, so the age is a hint and not a proof of trust.
- Status. The codes of the registry.
client transfer prohibitedis the transfer lock set by the registrar, client delete prohibitedandclient update prohibitedprotect against deletion and changes, pending deleteandredemption periodmean that the domain has expired and is going to be deleted. - DNSSEC. Whether the zone is signed, so that resolvers can check the DNS answers.
- Nameservers. The servers of the DNS hosting. To see the records they serve use the DNS lookup.
Whois of an IP address
Addresses are given out by five regional registries: ARIN (North America), RIPE NCC (Europe, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia), APNIC (Asia and the Pacific), LACNIC (Latin America and the Caribbean) and AFRINIC (Africa). The tool finds the right one and shows the record that the registry returns for the address, usually of the smallest network that contains it. The organization and the network name usually point to a provider or a hosting company. Private addresses (for example 192.168.0.1) and other reserved ranges have no public record. To see the country and the city of an address and its host name use the IP lookup.
Why the owner of a domain is not shown
The name, the address and the e-mail of the owner are hidden in most zones since the data protection laws (GDPR) and the policy of the registries; instead the registrar or a privacy service is shown. The tool does not show personal data and does not try to find it.
