Hex Converter: Hexadecimal, Decimal, Binary and Text

Everything happens in your browser: nothing you type is uploaded.

What is hexadecimal

Hexadecimal, or hex, is the number system with sixteen digits: 0 to 9 and then A to F for the values 10 to 15. It is base 16. Four bits make exactly one hex digit, and a byte is exactly two, so hex is a short and readable way to write binary data. You meet it in colors (#FF8800), memory addresses, MAC addresses, hashes, error codes and dumps of bytes.

How to convert hex to decimal

Every position is worth sixteen times the one to its right. FF is 15 x 16 + 15 = 255, and 1A3 is 1 x 256 + 10 x 16 + 3 = 419. The converter reads upper and lower case, spaces and underscores, and the prefixes 0x and \x, and writes with or without the prefix, in groups of bytes and in capitals if you like.

Hex to text and text to hex

Text is stored as bytes, and each byte is two hex digits: "Hello" is 48 65 6C 6C 6F. Letters of the English alphabet take one byte, other letters two to four bytes (UTF-8). Paste the hex with spaces, commas or line breaks between the bytes, or as one run of digits.

Float to hex (IEEE 754)

The "Float and hex" tab shows how a decimal number is stored in 32 bits (float) or 64 bits (double): 0.1 is 3DCCCCCD as a float and 3FB999999999999A as a double. The sign, exponent and mantissa are colored, and the page tells you when the number could not be stored exactly (0.1 cannot) and shows the value that is really stored. The other way round, enter the hex and read the number.

Limitations

• Whole numbers on the numbers tab; use the float tab for numbers with a decimal point.
• This is not a color converter: hex color codes are numbers here. For colors use the HTML color converter.
• Hex files in the Intel HEX format and hex to file conversion are not supported.
• Numbers of up to 5000 digits are read; text is converted as UTF-8.
