AVIF to JPG, PNG & PDF Converter
Free AVIF to JPG Converter (and AVIF to PNG and PDF)
Convert AVIF images to JPG, PNG or PDF online, right in your browser. Add one picture or many, choose the format and download the results one by one, as a ZIP archive, or as a single PDF with one image per page. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion happens on your device.
How to convert AVIF to JPG
- Drop your AVIF files into the box above, click it to choose files, or paste a copied image with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac).
- Choose JPG, PNG or PDF. For JPG and PDF set the quality (90–95 keeps the picture practically unchanged) and the background color for transparent areas.
- Optionally limit the width to 1920, 1280 or 800 pixels.
- Download each file, all of them as a ZIP, or, for PDF, everything combined into one document.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format created by the Alliance for Open Media, the group behind the AV1 video codec, and published in 2019. An AVIF file stores a picture compressed with AV1 inside a HEIF container, the same container family that iPhones use for HEIC photos. The file extension is .avif and the MIME type is image/avif.
- Small files: at the same visual quality an AVIF is often much smaller than a JPG and usually smaller than a WebP.
- Lossy and lossless compression, transparency (alpha channel) and animation (image sequences).
- HDR and wide color: 10- and 12-bit color, HDR transfer functions and wide color gamuts.
The price for the small size is compatibility: many older programs, printers, marketplaces and upload forms still do not accept AVIF, which is why people convert AVIF to JPG or PNG.
JPG, PNG or PDF: which format to choose?
- AVIF to JPG is the most compatible choice for photos: every device, editor, website and messenger accepts JPG. Transparent areas are filled with the background color you pick (white by default).
- AVIF to PNG keeps transparency and every pixel as decoded. Choose it for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics. PNG files of photos are much larger than JPG.
- AVIF to PDF is useful for documents, receipts and portfolios that must be printed, emailed or uploaded as PDF. The page can match the image size or be A4 or Letter.
Why do images save as AVIF?
Websites, online shops and image CDNs send AVIF to browsers that support it because it saves bandwidth. When you choose Save image as, the browser stores exactly what it received, so the file ends up as .avif even if the original was a JPG. Sometimes the file is even saved with a .jpg name while the content is AVIF, and other programs then refuse to open it. This tool reads the real format from the file itself, marks such disguised AVIF files and converts them properly. Renaming .avif to .jpg does not convert anything.
How to open AVIF files
- Browsers: Chrome (since version 85), Firefox (93), Edge (121), Opera and Safari (16.4, iOS 16.4) display AVIF. Just drag the file into a browser window.
- Windows 10 and 11: the Photos app opens AVIF when the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store is installed; recent Windows 11 builds usually have it already.
- Mac: Preview and Finder show AVIF on macOS Ventura and later; use File → Export to save as JPEG or PNG.
- iPhone and iPad: iOS 16 and later show AVIF images in Safari, Files and Photos.
- Android: supported natively since Android 12.
- Image editors and viewers: GIMP, XnView MP, IrfanView (with its plugins), Paint.NET and recent versions of Photoshop can open AVIF.
If a program cannot open your AVIF, convert it to JPG or PNG here; it takes a second and keeps the full resolution.
Quality, file size and HDR
AVIF compresses much better than JPG, so the converted JPG is usually larger than the AVIF. This is normal. The quality slider sets the trade-off: 92 is the default, lower values give smaller files with more compression artifacts. PNG is lossless and has no quality setting.
JPG and PNG are standard dynamic range formats. When an HDR AVIF is converted, the browser maps it to normal (SDR) brightness, so very bright highlights may look flatter than on an HDR screen. Colors are converted to sRGB.
Transparency and animation
Transparent AVIF images stay transparent when converted to PNG; for JPG and PDF the transparent areas get the background color you choose. Animated AVIF files are converted using their first frame, and the tool marks them.
AVIF vs WebP vs JPG
All three are fine for the web. JPG works everywhere; WebP is smaller and supported by practically all browsers in use; AVIF is usually the smallest of the three and adds HDR, but takes longer to encode and is not yet accepted everywhere. To create WebP files from your images, including from AVIF, use the WebP converter. For WebP files there is a separate WebP to JPG, PNG & PDF converter.
Privacy: your images stay on your device
Your browser decodes the AVIF and creates the JPG, PNG or PDF locally; no file is sent to a server. EXIF metadata, GPS location and camera details are not copied into the converted files.
Frequently asked questions
Is this AVIF to JPG converter free?
Yes, without registration, watermarks or a limit on the number of files. Each file can be up to 50 MB and 50 megapixels.
Do I need to install a program to convert AVIF?
No. The converter works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on computers and phones. Your browser must be able to display AVIF; if it cannot, the tool tells you.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, but at a quality of 90–95 the difference is not visible. For the exact pixels, convert to PNG.
Can I convert several AVIF files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like and download them as a ZIP archive, or combine them into one multi-page PDF in the order shown in the list.
Can I convert AVIF to WebP?
Yes, with the WebP converter: it accepts AVIF files and encodes them with the official libwebp encoder.
