Free WebP Converter: Convert JPG and PNG to WebP Online

This converter turns JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, ICO and AVIF images into WebP right in your browser. It uses libwebp, the official WebP encoder from Google, compiled to WebAssembly, so you get the same quality and file size as with the cwebp command line tool, without installing anything and without uploading your pictures anywhere.

How to convert images to WebP

  1. Drop your JPG or PNG files into the box above, click it to choose files, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). You can add many images at once.
  2. Pick a mode: Lossy for photos, Lossless for graphics, logos and screenshots, or Near-lossless for a smaller file that still looks identical.
  3. Move the quality slider: the result is re-encoded automatically, and you see the new size and the percentage saved for every image.
  4. Optionally limit the width to 1920, 1280 or 800 pixels, then download each WebP file or all of them as one ZIP archive.

What is WebP?

WebP is an image format created by Google for the web. A single format supports lossy compression (like JPG), lossless compression (like PNG), transparency (an alpha channel) and animation (like GIF). According to Google, lossless WebP images are about 26% smaller than PNG, and lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality. Smaller images mean faster pages, better Core Web Vitals (LCP in particular) and less mobile data.

Lossy vs lossless WebP

  • Lossy compression discards details the eye barely notices. It gives the smallest files and is the right choice for photos. A quality of 75–85 is a good starting point for websites.
  • Lossless compression keeps every pixel. Use it for logos, icons, diagrams, screenshots with text and other graphics with sharp edges and flat colors, where JPG-style artifacts would be visible.
  • Near-lossless slightly adjusts pixel values before lossless compression. The difference is practically invisible, while the file is usually much smaller than a true lossless one.

The Effort setting controls how hard libwebp searches for the best compression: Best produces the smallest files but takes longer on large images. Sharp RGB to YUV conversion keeps thin colored lines and text on colored backgrounds crisp in lossy mode.

Transparency and animation

WebP supports transparency in both lossy and lossless modes, so a transparent PNG stays transparent after conversion, which JPG cannot do. WebP also supports animation, but this tool converts only the first frame of an animated GIF and tells you so.

Why do images save as WebP?

When you right-click a picture on a website and choose Save image as, the browser saves the file exactly as the server sent it. Many sites, online shops and CDNs deliver images as WebP to save bandwidth, so the picture is saved as .webp even if the original was a JPG or PNG. This is normal and the file is a regular image; you can open it in any modern browser and in most image editors, or turn it into a JPG, PNG or PDF with the WebP to JPG converter.

WebP support in browsers and devices

  • Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera and other Chromium browsers: supported for many years.
  • Mozilla Firefox: supported since version 65 (2019).
  • Safari, iPhone and iPad: supported since Safari 14 and iOS 14 (2020). Photos on an iPhone can be viewed and shared as usual.
  • Windows 10 and 11: WebP opens in the Photos app; older builds may need the free Webp Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
  • macOS: Preview and Finder show WebP on current versions of macOS.
  • Android: supported natively.

Today more than 95% of internet users have a browser that displays WebP, so it is a safe default for websites. For the few old browsers that remain, use the <picture> fallback described below.

How to open a WebP file

Drag the file into a browser window, or open it with Photos (Windows), Preview (Mac), GIMP, Photoshop (version 23.2 and later), Paint.NET, IrfanView or XnView. Most online services such as Google Docs, WordPress and social networks accept WebP uploads.

Using WebP on a website

For every converted image the tool can generate an HTML snippet (the HTML code button). It uses the <picture> element: browsers that support WebP load the WebP file, and the rest fall back to the original JPG or PNG:

<picture>
  <source srcset="photo.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="photo.jpg" width="1280" height="853" alt="" loading="lazy" decoding="async">
</picture>
  • Keep the width and height attributes: they reserve space for the image and prevent layout shifts (CLS).
  • Fill in a meaningful alt text for accessibility and image search.
  • Use loading="lazy" for images below the fold, but not for the main image at the top of the page (the LCP element).
  • For responsive images, export several widths (for example 800, 1280 and 1920 px) and list them in srcset with the sizes attribute.
  • Many CDNs and caching plugins can convert images to WebP automatically; converting before upload gives you full control over quality.

Privacy: your images never leave your device

All conversion happens locally in your browser with WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so the tool works for private photos and confidential screenshots. EXIF metadata, GPS location and camera details are not copied into the WebP files.

Frequently asked questions

Is this WebP converter free?

Yes. It is free, without registration, watermarks or a limit on the number of files. Each file can be up to 50 MB and 50 megapixels.

Does converting JPG to WebP reduce quality?

Lossy WebP re-compresses the picture, so a very low quality setting can add visible artifacts. At a quality of 75–90 most photos look the same as the JPG while the file is noticeably smaller. Use the Compare slider to check the result before downloading.

Why is my WebP file larger than the original?

This happens with JPG files that are already heavily compressed, with tiny images and with PNG graphics converted in lossy mode at high quality. Lower the quality, try lossless mode for graphics, or simply keep the original. The tool marks such files so you do not replace a smaller image with a larger one.

Can I convert AVIF to WebP?

Yes. Add AVIF files like any other image: your browser decodes them and libwebp encodes the WebP. This works in browsers that can display AVIF (Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or later). AVIF usually compresses better than WebP, so the WebP file can be larger than the AVIF; convert when you need wider compatibility. To turn AVIF into JPG, PNG or PDF, use the AVIF to JPG converter.

Is WebP better than PNG?

For the web, usually yes: lossless WebP keeps the same pixels and transparency as PNG in a smaller file. PNG remains useful for editing and for software that does not support WebP.

Can I convert WebP back to JPG or PNG?

Yes. Use the WebP to JPG, PNG & PDF converter, or any editor that opens WebP.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. The converter runs in Safari, Chrome and Firefox on phones and tablets, including iPhones and iPads: the encoder is part of the page, so the result does not depend on the image formats your browser can export by itself.
