JPG to BMP Converter
JPG to BMP Converter Online, Free
Convert JPG, PNG and other pictures to BMP in your browser: a standard 24-bit BMP, or a 32-bit BMP with transparency. Add one picture or many and download the results one by one or in a ZIP archive. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs on your device.
How to convert JPG to BMP
- Drop your JPG (or PNG, GIF, WebP) files into the box above or click it to choose them. BMP is selected as the result.
- Choose the options: a background color for transparent areas, and, if you need it, the 32-bit BMP with transparency (see below).
- Download each BMP or all of them as a ZIP.
Why would you need a BMP?
For websites and sharing, a BMP is a poor choice: it is not compressed, so a 12-megapixel photo is 36 MB. You need it when a program or device asks for it: old software and forms, embedded displays and boards that read BMP from an SD card, laser engraving and embroidery software, industrial and lab programs, or when you want a simple format without compression for processing or teaching. A BMP made from a JPG does not become better: it contains the JPG’s picture, only stored without compression.
Transparent BMP: does BMP support transparency?
The usual 24-bit BMP has no transparency: every pixel is a solid color. When a picture with transparent areas (for example a PNG) is converted to a 24-bit BMP, the transparent areas are filled with the background color you pick, white by default.
There is a special variant, the 32-bit BMP with an alpha channel (a BMP with the BITMAPV4 header), which can store transparency. This tool creates it when you switch on 32-bit BMP with transparency. Support is uneven: browsers and the image functions of Windows read the transparency, but many programs ignore it and show the transparent parts as black or white. If your program does not need BMP specifically, use PNG or WebP for transparent images: they are supported everywhere and are much smaller.
To make a BMP with a transparent background: take a PNG with transparency, drop it here, choose BMP, switch on the 32-bit option, and download. A JPG cannot be the source of transparency, because JPG has none.
Where is BMP used today?
BMP is no longer a format for photos on the web, but it has not disappeared. It is still found where simplicity matters more than file size:
- Windows itself. Images that you copy to the clipboard travel between programs as a device-independent bitmap (DIB), the BMP data; bitmap resources are stored inside programs and DLLs; Paint, Photos and every Windows program open BMP files.
- Microcontrollers and embedded devices. A BMP needs no decoder: libraries for Arduino and similar boards read pictures for TFT and LCD displays, boot logos and menus directly from a BMP file on an SD card.
- Industrial, scientific and medical equipment. Cameras, microscopes and measuring instruments save frames as BMP because nothing is compressed or changed, and machine vision software reads them fast.
- Printing, engraving and cutting. Laser engravers, CNC and embroidery software, label printers and plotters often accept simple BMP bitmaps, including 1-bit black and white ones.
- Teaching and your own code. The format is so simple (a small header and rows of pixels) that it is the usual first image format to read and write in programming and image-processing courses.
- Old software and strict requirements. Some forms, government systems, games and legacy programs still ask for a BMP file.
For websites, photos and sharing, use JPG, PNG or WebP instead: they are many times smaller.
BMP vs JPG vs PNG vs GIF
| BMP | JPG | PNG | GIF | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compression | None (usually) | Lossy | Lossless | Lossless, 256 colors |
| File size of a photo | Very large | Small | Medium to large | Poor for photos |
| Colors | Up to 16.7 million (24-bit) | 16.7 million | 16.7 million | 256 |
| Transparency | Only 32-bit BMP with alpha, poorly supported | No | Yes | One transparent color |
| Animation | No | No | No (APNG aside) | Yes |
| Typical use | Windows, devices, raw processing | Photos, web, email | Graphics, screenshots, logos | Simple animations |
The size difference is large: a 1920×1080 picture is 6.2 MB as a 24-bit BMP, a 12-megapixel (4000×3000) photo is 36 MB, while the same pictures are usually 0.3–5 MB as JPG.
Convert JPG to BMP without this tool
- Windows Paint: open the picture, then File → Save as → BMP picture (choose the 24-bit type).
- ImageMagick:
magick input.jpg output.bmp(addBMP3:before the file name for the most compatible type). - FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i input.jpg output.bmp
Frequently asked questions
Is the JPG to BMP converter free and private?
Yes. No registration, no watermark, and your pictures are not uploaded.
Why is the BMP so much bigger than the JPG?
The BMP stores 3 bytes for every pixel, the JPG stores a compressed version. A 1920×1080 picture is always 6.2 MB as a 24-bit BMP.
Does converting JPG to BMP improve quality?
No. The BMP shows exactly what the JPG shows, including its compression artifacts, and does not add detail.
Which BMP type is created?
By default a 24-bit uncompressed BMP, the type that every program reads. With the transparency option a 32-bit BMP with an alpha channel.
