Number to Words Converter: Write Numbers in Words (English, Ukrainian, Russian, Portuguese)
Write a number, or a list of numbers with one on each line, and get it in words at once. Choose the language, and an amount of money if you need one. Everything happens in your browser: nothing is sent anywhere.
Paste an English text. The numbers that are written in words (twenty-one, one hundred and five, three point one four, the twenty-first) become digits, and the rest of the text stays as it is.
Number to Words Converter: Write Numbers in Words
Write a number, and get it in words: 1234 becomes "one thousand two hundred thirty-four". The tool works in English, Ukrainian, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese, writes the ordinals of English ("twenty-first"), writes an amount of money with the cents, and also goes the other way: it turns the numbers that are written in English words in a text into digits. Everything happens in your browser, so the numbers you type are not sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Choose the language and write the number in the left box. You can write many numbers, one on each line: every line gets its own answer.
- Choose the options: a capital first letter, the hyphen, the "and" of British English, the ordinal.
- For an amount of money choose the currency, and the cents are written too.
- Press Copy.
A number can have a minus sign, a decimal part, spaces between the groups of digits (1 234 567) and the signs of the groups. Tell the tool which sign is the decimal one: a point (1,234.56) or a comma (1.234,56). The decimal part is read digit by digit: 3.14 is "three point one four".

How to write numbers in words in English
- 21 to 99 are written with a hyphen between the tens and the ones: twenty-one, forty-five, ninety-nine.
- Hundred, thousand, million stay in the singular after a number: two hundred, five thousand, three million (never "two hundreds").
- "And" is used in British English after the hundreds: "one hundred and five", "two thousand and five". American English leaves it out: "one hundred five". Both are understood; the option "and" lets you choose.
- Ordinals (first, second, third) are made by changing only the last word: "twenty-first", "one hundred and first". Notice the irregular ones: first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth, twelfth, and the tens that end in -ieth (twentieth, thirtieth).
- Years and dates are read in a special way: 1999 is "nineteen ninety-nine", 2026 is "twenty twenty-six". The tool reads the number as a quantity ("one thousand nine hundred ninety-nine"), so for a year write the two halves yourself.
- Large numbers use the short scale: a billion is a thousand million (1,000,000,000), a trillion is a thousand billion.
An amount of money in words, and a cheque
For a cheque, a contract or an invoice the amount is written in words as well as in digits. Choose a currency, and the tool writes the units and the cents: 1234.56 in dollars is "one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents". The cents are rounded if there are more than two digits. The option "Cheque style" writes the cents as a fraction, "one thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars", as it is written on a cheque. In pounds the small coin is "pence" ("two pounds and two pence", but "one penny").
Ukrainian, Russian and Portuguese
- Ukrainian and Russian. The numeral agrees with the gender of the noun: "одна гривня, дві гривні, п'ять гривень", "один рубль, два рубля, пять рублей". For an amount of money the tool takes the gender and the form of the noun by itself (гривня, гривні, гривень). Without money, choose the gender for the numbers 1 and 2: "одна тисяча", "дві тисячі" (the thousand is always feminine). Only the nominative case is written: "двадцять три", not "двадцяти трьох".
- Portuguese (Brazil). The tool follows the Brazilian spelling (dezesseis, dezessete) and the short scale (um bilhão is 109). The "e" stands before the last part of a number only when it is less than a hundred or a round hundred: "mil e um", "mil e cem", but "mil duzentos e trinta e quatro". Thousands agree with the gender of the noun ("duas mil"), and a round million takes "de" before the currency: "um milhão de reais".
English words to numbers
The second mode is for a text. Paste an English text, and the numbers written in words become digits: "Two hundred thirty-four people came on the twenty-first of May" becomes "234 people came on the 21st of May". It understands hyphenated numbers, "a hundred" and "a thousand", the British "and", "minus" and "negative", a decimal part ("three point one four"), and ordinal numbers. It does not cut a number in the middle of a sentence: "one two three" gives "1 2 3", and "salt and pepper" stays as it is. By default the word "one" is changed too; tick the option if it must stay (as in "one of them"). The words "first", "second" and "third" alone are not changed, because they are often not numbers ("wait a second"); tick the option to change them too.
In Excel, Google Sheets and Python
- Excel has no built-in function that writes a number in words in English or in the other languages of this page. Microsoft publishes a macro for this (a VBA function called SpellNumber) that you add to the workbook. For a few values it is quicker to take them from this page.
- Google Sheets has no such function either; it needs a script or an add-on.
- Python has the library num2words, which knows these four languages:
from num2words import num2words num2words(1234) # one thousand, two hundred and thirty-four num2words(21, to="ordinal") # twenty-first num2words(42, lang="uk") # сорок два num2words(42, lang="ru") # сорок два num2words(42, lang="pt_BR") # quarenta e dois
Limitations
- Numbers have up to 36 digits in English and up to 27 in the other languages.
- The ordinals work in English only. Ukrainian and Russian are written in the nominative case only, with no declension.
- A decimal part is read digit by digit. It is not the formal way to read a fraction in Ukrainian or Russian ("три цілих чотирнадцять сотих"), so check it if a document needs the formal form.
- For a legal document, a contract or a cheque check the rules of your country: how to write the cents, the capital letters and the currency. The words that this page gives follow the usual rules.
- The words to numbers mode works for English only, and the numbers must be spelled correctly.
- Your numbers and texts are not saved. Only your choice of the language and the options stays in this browser.
