How to convert PNG to JPG
- Drop your PNG files into the box above, click it to choose them, or choose several at once.
- Set the quality: 90–95 looks the same as the original for photos, 80–85 gives noticeably smaller files.
- If the PNG has transparent areas, choose the background color for them (white by default).
- Optionally limit the width, then download each JPG or all of them in one ZIP. You can also get a PDF.
Why convert PNG to JPG?
- Smaller files. A photo saved as PNG is several times larger than the same photo as JPG, so a JPG is faster to send, upload and load.
- Upload limits and forms. Many websites, forms and services accept only JPG or limit the file size to a few megabytes.
- Compatibility. JPG opens everywhere, on every phone, printer and program.
What happens to transparency?
JPG cannot be transparent. Transparent areas of a PNG become a solid color: the converter fills them with the background color you choose, white by default, so the picture does not turn black. If you need the transparency, keep the PNG.
Can PNG be converted to JPG without losing quality?
Not completely. JPG is a lossy format, every conversion discards some information. At quality 95–100 the difference cannot be seen in a photo, but it is there. Screenshots, text and logos suffer the most: they get blurry fringes around sharp edges and often become larger than the PNG. If you need an exact copy or sharp graphics, stay with PNG.
JPG vs PNG: which format is better?
| JPG (JPEG) | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy: some detail is discarded | Lossless: every pixel is kept |
| Best for | Photos and pictures with smooth colors | Screenshots, text, logos, drawings, graphics with sharp edges |
| File size of a photo | Small | Several times larger |
| Transparency | No | Yes, with soft edges |
| Saving again and again | Loses a little quality every time | No loss |
| Colors | 16.7 million | 16.7 million, plus transparency |
In short: use JPG for photos that are shown or sent, and PNG for graphics, text, screenshots and anything transparent or edited many times. For printing, the resolution of the picture (about 300 dots per inch at the printed size) matters more than the format; a high-quality JPG and a PNG print the same.
