Kaomoji: Copy and Paste Japanese Text Faces and Emoticons

Click a face, and it is copied: paste it into Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, Discord, WhatsApp, an email or a comment. The faces are sorted by feeling (happy, sad, angry, shy, love, shrug, table flip and others), and there is a search if you look for one. The faces you copied last are shown at the top, so your favourites are always at hand. The page works in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

What is a kaomoji

Kaomoji (顔文字, "face letters") is a Japanese kind of emoticon. A Western emoticon such as :-) is a face turned on its side. A kaomoji is read upright and is made of many signs, so it can show more: (◕‿◕) is a smile, (╥﹏╥) is crying, ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ is a bear. A kaomoji is only text, so you can paste it anywhere you can write.

Popular kaomoji and what they mean

  • Shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯: "I do not know" or "whatever".
  • Table flip (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻: rage. The calm answer is ┬─┬ ノ( ゜-゜ノ), "put the table back".
  • Lenny face ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°): a meme face for a sly joke.
  • Bear ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ and cat (=^・ω・^=): cute animals for messages to friends.
  • Hug (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ and love (♡‿♡): warm words without writing them.

Kaomoji or emoji

Emojis are small pictures that each device draws in its own way. A kaomoji is built from letters and signs, so it looks nearly the same everywhere and needs no emoji support. You can use both in one message. To find emojis use the emoji picker.

Why a face may look broken

  • Kaomoji use signs from many alphabets (Japanese, Korean, Thai and others). If a device or a font does not have a sign, it shows an empty box in its place. This is more likely on old phones and in some programs.
  • In chats that use Markdown, such as Discord, Slack and Reddit, a backslash is not shown. The shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ then loses its arm and looks like ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Type two backslashes, ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯, to get the right face.
  • Some forms and names do not accept special signs, and then they remove them or show question marks.

Limitations

  • Only text faces are here, with no pictures or stickers.
  • The faces are copied as plain text, as they are written on the page, so the look depends on the font of the place where you paste them.
  • The recent faces are kept only in this browser.
